TO BE ALIVE, TO BE HEALTHY

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare neurodegenerative disease with varying prevalence rates worldwide. Recent studies estimate the global prevalence to be between 4.42 and 5 per 100,000 people.

Given the current world population of approximately 8 billion, this translates to an estimated 350,000 to 400,000 individuals living with ALS globally.

What is Riluzole

Riluzole is a medication used to slow the progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
It was the first drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically for ALS and remains a cornerstone in the management of the disease.

How it works

1.
Riluzole modulates the activity of glutamate, a neurotransmitter that is believed to contribute to nerve cell damage in ALS.
By reducing glutamate's excitatory effects, Riluzole may help protect motor neurons from overexcitation and subsequent degeneration.
2.
  3.
It may also have neuroprotective properties through other, less well-understood pathways.

Benefits of Riluzole

Riluzole does not cure ALS but can modestly slow its progression.

Survival Benefit:

• Clinical trials show that Riluzole extends survival or the time before requiring mechanical ventilation by approximately 2–3 months.

• The benefit is more pronounced in the early stages of ALS.
